How to Crochet a Railway Track Line - Road Play Mat CAL

Welcome to another bonus tutorial for my Crochet Road Play Mat, this time for a Railway Track!

This pattern is worked as two squares actually, which you alternate depending on how long you wish to make your railway line. As you can see from the photo above I worked a total of 5 squares to go down one edge of my road play mat, so I started with a chain of 90 half double crochet foundation stitches (5 x 18).

If you are new to my crochet-a-long road play mat you can find all the links to the various squares which make up the play mat at the bottom of this pattern.

Materials required for the railway line
  • DK / Light worsted weight yarn in Green, Grey and Brown
  • 3.5mm E/4 crochet hook
  • Yarn needle and scissors
Terminology

sl st = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
st(s) = stitch(es)
ea = each

G = green
Gr = grey
B = brown

This pattern is in US terminology.

Railway Track Patterns

Left Grid                                                                                         Right Grid
Row 1
Using a 3.5 mm E/4 crochet hook and G yarn, work 18 hdc foundation stitches - (18)

Alternatively you can chain 19, work 1hdc into your 3rd st from hook (don't count the loop on your hook) and crochet 1hdc in ea st along, the chains at the end count as a hdc.

Rows 2 - 4
Ch1 (don't count as st here or onwards), TURN, 1hdc in first st and in ea st along - (18)

- Row 5 (Square 1 - Left Grid)
Join B in ch1, TURN, *1hdc in next 2 sts but join G when finishing last hdc (when pulling thru all 3 loops - this will now be referred to as 'end of st'), 1hdc in next 2 sts joining B in end of last st* repeat from * to * until last 2 sts, 1hdc in last 2 sts - (18)

- Row 5 (Square 2 - Right Grid)
Ch1, TURN, *1hdc in next 2 sts joining B in end of last st, 1hdc in next 2 sts joining G in end of last st* repeat from * to * until last 2 sts, 1hdc in last 2 sts - (18)

Row 6
Join Gr in ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first st and in ea st along - (18)

Rows 7 - 9
Repeat row 5 for either left or right grid, joining B in ch1 for Left Grid to begin, or joining G in ch1 for Right Grid to begin.

Row 10
Repeat row 6.

Row 11
Repeat row 5 for either left or right grid, joining B in ch1 for Left Grid to begin, or joining G in ch1 for Right Grid to begin.

Rows 12 - 15
Join G in ch1 (if needbe), TURN, 1hdc in first st and in ea st along - (18) Fasten off and tie in all tails.

And now you're done! You need to work a Left Track Square then a Right Track Square, then back to a Left Track Square until you have your desired length. This is so that the tracks match up.
