CAL Crochet Road Play Mat - Tutorial 2: Pond Square and Round Tree

Crochet-a-Long Road Play Mat
Tutorial 2: Pond Square & Round Tree

Welcome to episode two of my CAL for my Road Play Mat, and this week I am going to be showing you how to make the pond square and a mini round tree.

In total we will be making 20 squares, of which there will be 8 designs plus extras, to make a 4 x 5 square blanket/play mat (40cm x 50cm approx.). You can of course make up more duplicates of the 8 designs or even invent your own, to make this play mat into an even bigger project, as this CAL is completely modular!

So for this episode you will need the following materials;
  • DK / Light Worsted weight yarn in Green
  • DK / Light Worsted weight yarn in Blue
  • DK / Light Worsted weight yarn in Brown
  • 3.5 mm E/4 crochet hook (or any hook size that is suitable for the yarn you are using)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Tiny amount of stuffing, you can use either toy stuffing or yarn scraps
You can of course use Aran / Worsted weight yarn if you prefer. We are working to a 10cm x 10cm (4" x 4") square, but as long as all your squares are the same size so you can join them together at the end, then that is fine, using aran / worsted yarn will just make them slightly bigger.

Abbreviations

ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
st(s) = stitch(es)
ea = each

G = green
B = blue
Br = brown

This pattern is in US terminology.

Pond Square

Remember when following this grid, which end you are at, at the end of reach row, before starting the next!

Row 1
Using G and a 3.5mm E/4 crochet hook, crochet 18 hdc foundation sts - (18)

Foundation stitch tutorials (sadly no hdc tutorial but these should help if you are new to the stitch)

Alternatively you can chain 19 and work 1hdc in your 3rd st from hook and in ea st along, counting your last 2 chs as a hdc - (18)

Row 2
Ch1 (don't count as st here on onwards), TURN, 1hdc in first 6 sts but join B when finishing last hdc (when pulling thru all 3 loops - this will now be referred to 'end of last st'), 1hdc in next 6 sts joining G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 6 sts - (18)

Row 3
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 4 sts but join B in end of last st, 1hdc in next 9 sts joining G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 5 sts - (18)

Row 4
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 4 sts but join B in end of last st, 1hdc in next 12 sts joining G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 2 sts - (18)

Row 5
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first st but join B in end of st, 1hdc in next 14 sts joining G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 3 sts - (18)

Row 6
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 3 sts but join B in end of last st, 1hdc to end - (18)

Row 7
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 15 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc to end - (18)

Row 8
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 3 sts but join B in end of last st, 1hdc to end - (18)

Row 9
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 15 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc to end - (18)

Row 10
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 3 sts but join B in end of last st, 1hdc to end - (18)

Row 11
Join G in ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 2 sts but join B in end of st, 1hdc in next 12 sts joining G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 4 sts - (18)

Row 12
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 5 sts but join B in end of st, 1hdc in next 9 sts joining G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 4 sts - (18)

Row 13
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 7 sts but join B in end of st, 1hdc in next 4 sts joining G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 7 sts - (18)

Rows 14 - 15
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first st and in ea st along - (18) Fasten off and tie in all tails. See video for suggestion on how to carry over your yarn to save sewing in lots of ends.

You will need to make 4 pond squares for this CAL.

Round Tree

Round 1
Using G and a 3.5mm E/4 crochet hook, ch4, sl st in 1st ch to form a loop, work 6sc into centre of your 4ch loop, sl st in 1st sc to join - (6)

Round 2
Ch1 (don't count as st here and onwards), 2sc in same st as previous sl st, 2sc in ea st around, sk ch1, sl st in 1st sc - (12)

Round 3
Ch1, 1sc in same st as previous sl st, 2sc in next st, *1sc in next st, 2sc in next st* repeat from * to * until end, sk ch1, sl st in 1st sc - (18)

Rounds 4 - 6
Ch1, 1sc in same st as previous sl st, 1sc in ea st around, sk ch1, sl st in 1st sc - (18)

Round 7
Ch1, 1sc in same st as previous sl st, sc2tog, *1sc in next st, sc2tog* repeat from * to * until end, sk ch1, sl st in 1st sc - (12)

Round 8
Ch1, staring in same st as previous sl st sc2tog, *sc2tog* repeat from * to * until end, sk ch1, join Br in sl st in 1st sc - (6)

Rounds 9 - 12
Ch1, 1sc in same st as previous sl st, 1sc in ea st around, sk ch1, sl st in 1st sc - (6) Fasten off leaving a long enough tail end for sewing onto your square.

You can make as many or as little trees as you desire. Why not make lots for a forest, or sew on some red for mini apples, or even swap the green for pink for blossom trees! Have fun experimenting.

I hope you will join me on this fun CAL!
